Be Extraordinary!

Some of us can get lost in Bible words and forget to apply them to our daily lives. Seeds, harvest, the blind, the crippled, loaves, fishes: catch words for our Bible reading. And who these days ever uses the word "fishes"? It's "fish." I caught fish, not fishes. But those particular miracle stories are ingrained in our brains, so "fishes" it is.

Yes, God intends for us to read the Bible but more than that He intends us to apply its teaching to our daily round. Today, for example, I was planting flowers and vegetables. I love the solitude. But then I thought, Why not invite my youngest out to sit with me? As it turns out he didn't come out, but he knew he was welcome.

Later I took a break from planting. Same son was watching a "House" episode he'd recorded. There he was...in my path. I could have rested for a short while and run back out and missed seeing him, or I could have stayed. I stayed. It's a simple thing. But we spent an hour together. That's an hour more than nothing. He's 18 and doesn't exactly sit home much. Unless he's sleeping!

So it may sound like a small thing but life is made up of countless small things one person chooses to do or not do for another. Small matters. Jesus was a very simple man going about His daily round doing the ordinary. Many times the ordinary turned extraordinary in His case, but isn't that true of us too? Any one of our ordinary acts has the possibility of becoming extraordinary. Remember that. You never know!
